In line with the aims of SAAP, WEFH provides support and
accommodation to families in crisis and assists them to achieve a level of
independence that enables them to re-engage with their local community and live
independently. The Service achieves these aims by using an integrated
collaborative service delivery model that identifies and responds appropriately
to the needs of families, beyond that of providing shelter.
WEFH supports and
accommodates families who are homeless or are experiencing a crisis which
threatens their current accommodation. The majority of families requiring
assistance are single parents (male and female) and their children. We continue
to take into consideration the needs of single male parents and their children
when allocating properties. WEFH is the only organisation currently offering
accommodation to this client group in the Illawarra. We also house non
custodial single parents both male and female
having regular access visits. Often these parents are receiving very
little income but need to provide sleeping provisions for weekend or holiday
visits. We continue to acknowledge the diversity within the definition of
‘family’, as clients present to the service in same sex relationships, multi
generational groups, siblings without parents and adults with access
arrangements to children from previous relationships (now separated), that are
not their own.
Wollongong Emergency Family Housing Inc (WEFH) is funded
under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP), administered
through the New South Wales Department of Community Services.
